STUD NEWS - TANLEE STUD

We have had six stunning foals this season, still waiting for another three babies. Two beautiful fillys from Bangor Michaelangelo, his first two foals.

STUD NEWS - KINGSWOOD STUD

Some people may be aware but most people not aware that Kingswood Stud moved from Yamanto to Glamorgan Vale some twelve months ago. It was a major job relocating horses and the rest of the menagerie. Horses have settled in well, but the move meant no stables (hence the sale of the lovely Buckskin stallion "Prinley Park Stormboy"), no yards, no small paddocks, no foaling paddocks etc. Yes foaling time has come around before any major fencing could be done, but yeah we survive and roll with the flow. "Moondyne Raindancer" produced a chestnut colt to "Simeon Sovereign", "Owendale Honeysuckle" produced a chestnut colt to "Prinley Park Stormboy", "Kingswood Miss Muff" produced a very leggy chestnut filly to "Prinley Park Stormboy", "Kingswood Lady Yasmin" has also produced another black filly full sister to "Kingswood Anastasia and "Kingswood Elegance", and last but my no means least "Glengwin High Society" has produced an equistite little buckskin colt to "Simeon Sovereign", obviously premature but full of life. Still have another "B" mare to foal and 2 "As' plus visiting "B" mare to foal. "Kingswood Anastasia", now owned by Judith Blacket has been doing well in the dressage area, ridden so competently by Leisel Dingley. Recently heading off to a dressage day competing in three events and winning all three events, and only last week brought home a State Dressage title for her new owner and rider.

STUD NEWS - MERLOD

Rod and Mary Dunn have sold the Welsh B colt Merlod Jonty to Kim and Jo Stewart-Gray of Hirstglen. Jonty was the foal of the show earlier this year at the All Breeds Youngstock Show and was successful at Gatton Show. We hope to see more of Jonty in the show ring in the future.

STUD NEWS - ARAWEL LODGE

The Arawel Lodge team has had a very successful year of showing 2009. A.L. Shakira, winning Champion Mare at the Qld All Welsh, going on to win Supreme Welsh Exhibit at the Fraser Coast Welsh Feature and then to the RNA with her huge belly going on again to win Supreme Welsh Mountain Pony at Brisbane Royal.

Nilton Minuette is proving to be my next show exhibit, winning Dry mare at Qld All Welsh, 1st Mare Fraser Coast and 1st Mare at Brisbane Royal. Just cant seem to beat Shakira. Might leave Shakira at home for a while...

Arawel Lodge Bay Baron also doing very well winning gelding classes, including Supreme Gelding at Fraser Coast. Now getting ready to break in.

I would like to thank Lorelle Laffey, and David Whye for all their help with showing and preparing my ponies.

We have had two foals so far, a filly out of Nilton Minuette and of course no. 7 colt from Shakira. Awaiting a couple more later in the season, last crop of foals from Bambury Baron.

I would also like to thank Michelle Shephard of Snowdon Vale Stud for the fantasic opportunity of having the exceptional stallion "ELARGEE PENZANCE" (Brecn Bach Poppy Soldier imp NZ x Elargee Primrose) on lease for my stud.

Heidi Gear - Mobile: 0417 671 950

STUD NEWS - WYANDRA PONY STUD

Wyandra is looking forward to the last foal from Bambury Baron out of Wyandra Jessarae due November, last colt foal was very pleasing with the most beautiful head and is now being gelded and sold for a future childs pony.

Wyandra Lady Sara has gone to Arawel Lodge to join with the lovely stallion Elargee Penzance along wth Wyandra Lady Bambury, so looking forward to seeing what they produce next season.

STUD NEWS - DRACMOORE STUD

Dracmoore Stud is very pleased to have purchased the Welsh Section C mare Cardi Out to Lunch from Monsrebel Stud in NSW. We are very happy with this mare and we have sent her to Eradan Brennig for a 2010 foal. We have also leased the lovely Mosman Park Bronwyn and Eradan Serene from Stonyvale, Bronwyn will be used as a broodmare and Serene who has extravegent action will be broken into harness so finally we will have a Welsh in harness. Dracmoore Foxy Lady has been sold to Victoria and we wish her new owner all the best.

Kathy Pile

STUD NEWS - BARN HILL STUD

All the Mum’s are working hard at Barn Hill with their new foals. And there’s even a bit of colour this year with two coloured colts by Mariana Lodge Versace (by Coed Coch Gwyndaf), which is a nice change from all the grey! Our other foals this year are by our own Barn Hill Fletcher.

Away from the stud, we are happy to report some performance success stories in Qld EFA Dressage. Our part welsh gelding, Barn Hill Rebel Yell, ridden by Sam, continues to do well in pony dressage and just recently competed in his first official Medium test. Sam was very proud to be Novice Champion at the Brenda Whitman Classic (Regional Championships), and then 4th and 5th in the Elementary at the State Championships.

STUD NEWS - ROSENEATH WELSH PONIES

Above: Glynyarra Park Rose Red after her win at Brisbane Royal.

The Section C mare Glynyarra Park Rose Red, continued her winning streak for 2009 at Brisbane Royal, taking Best Welsh C/D Exhibit. Many thanks to Stephen Pile who ran her so beautifully. Rosie finished her year with Champion C/D Exhibit at the Noosa Show in September and is now enjoying some well deserved paddock time.

Trapalanda Downs Jaxon Sec C gelding, arrived from Burrowa Stud, Victoria in early October. He was at the breaker within 36 hrs of arriving in Qld and has impressed with his amazing movement and intelligence. He will have a good stint of mustering after breaking in, then will hit the arena to commence channelling that movement into the classical principles of dressage over the next few years. He is giving every indication of being a wonderful saddle horse. Hopefully he won`t look back on his 4 yrs of running with mares as a stallion too fondly!

Wattles Halifax, a Sec B gelding is in serious training and work for his Interschool debut with his new 11 yo rider in 2010. He just loves Amanda and looks forward to her visits to ride him as she always has a treat hidden somewhere. Amanda will ride for her Wheatlands Primary School.

Burrowa Dancing Sec C filly has arrived after making her showing debut at the NSW All Welsh. Dancing is by Trapalanda Downs Jaxon and will be shown in 2010.

Roseneath Fable Sec B by Wattles Legend, has gone to Sydney Hewison from Kingaroy for a harness career. He is a showy, great moving pony who is sure to excel in Syd`s capable hands.

Ruth Porter.

Been campaigning your ponies? Tell us about your successes in the competition arena - be that showing, pony club, Dressage, Harness or any other equestrian competition. Are you a new member? Then why not tell us a bit about yourself and your ponies. Basically anything that is news worthy and will be of general interest to other members in promoting the activities of Welsh ponies in Qld, is welcome. No references to stock being for sale are allowed, nor any advertising of stallions standing at stud - such items will be edited out of the text if submitted.

REPORT FROM GUNALDA MEETING - 23rd Aug 2009

BELOW IS THE REPORT SUBMITTED BY RUTH PORTER AFTER THE WORKING GROUP MEETING HELD LAST MONTH

A wave of interest in Welsh Pony classes at Agricultural Shows was generated in the SE Qld area from posts placed on the All Welsh forum under SE Qld Shows. The discussion site had well over 4000 hits. Many of the bloggers shared information about Welsh programmes at Ag Shows in their local areas and it became evident that due to the activity and support from members and the RPG that several areas had clusters of Welsh programmes available to them. It was evident that the northern end of SE Qld which included the geographical areas of Wide Bay and Fraser Coast and the inland region of the Burnett, plus the northern Sunshine Coast did not have the same Ag Show classes. Classes usually consisted all Sections together as Stallion/colt, Mare/filly, some with gelding classes and several that did not allow the gelding to compete for Champ if he did have a class. These classes were frequently attended by part welsh ponies also.

A group of members with the common interest of addressing this situation decided to hold a meeting at Gunalda Hall which was a good mid point for the region, to see whether there was enough interest from across this large region, to engage Ag Shows to the introduction or expansion of their Welsh programmes.

I will backtrack briefly to 12 mths prior when a meeting was held in Kilkivan to look at whether a Feature Show could be organized in 2009 in the region. For those of us who were there we know what a terrific Feature Show was pulled together by member Pracilla Pearson of Ludlow Park Welsh Ponies, who had an advantage by being a senior member of the Fraser Coast Show Society, but that advantage at an executive level in no way diminished the enormous amount of planning and work that went in to the realization of classes on the ground at the Fraser Coast Show, with Frances Best from Victoria judging. In short, the members in the region had a good role model to follow in what can be achieved. I must also mention that Wondai Show in the South Burnett had a Welsh Feature eg expanded classes across all sections in 2008 due to the generous sponsorship of Mark and Lauren Blamires, local Welsh Pony owners, and Mark`s family business.

So returning to the Gunalda meeting held on 23rd August 2009. About 20 members attended the meeting chaired by John Riley with Sue Groundwater and Kathy Pile from the Qld RPG Comittee also in attendance. John gave the meeting a comprehensive overveiw of a Working Group and those present voted to form a Working Group with Terms of Reference agreed upon. John advised the group that Qld had 3 Medal Shows and that a 4th may like to be planned for this region.

The general consensus of the meeting was that:

1. The Working Group would target 6-10 Ag Shows across the region in question, to provide an expanded Welsh programme at their shows in 2010. The RPG would provide assistance to this endeavour. A Hi-Point system across these shows with annual awards was considered an excellent idea to encourage members support of the shows.

2. An education day covering preparation, showing and ring craft for Welsh Ponies be held before the 2010 show season, perhaps to be discussed at the AGM as to how that could be organized. Gunalda Showgrounds as a central point could be considered as a venue. It has lots of shade and being just off the Bruce Highway is accessible.

3. Depending on the interest shown and the momentum that may be created by members, a Native Pony Show may be held in 2010 or 2011.

There was good representation of members from across the region and these got together in clusters to meet each other and exchange contact details so a co-ordinated approach to selected shows in their particular area could be made.

Sue Groundwater has distributed the email addresses and other contact details of people at the meeting who agreed to be contacted.

Anyone not able to be at the meeting is encouraged to contact Sue or myself to stay in touch with what is happening with the Working Group or to get involved with others in their local areas to approach the Show Societies.

Finally, a big thank you to the Qld RPG for it`s support for these initiatives and for it`s guidance in helping create the Working Group. As we all know John, Sue and Kathy all attend every RPG meeting, John the COM meetings in Victoria, and here they were attending another meeting in their busy schedules all in the name of supporting members and their ponies.

Ruth Porter.

APPENDUM
I am adding this as inspiration to the Working Group. Noosa Show expanded it`s Welsh programme after members approached the Chief Ring Steward, who was most approachable. The call for funds went out as Noosa needed to cover the costs of this. Funds, above the requirements, were dedicated within 24hrs and Dracmoore Welsh Ponies stepped in with prizes for the Champions of each section. Christine told me personally that she was astounded and delighted by the interest in, generosity of and politness and co-operation displayed by all the Wesh members she dealt with. She is more than happy to consider the expanded programme in 2010 and tentatively offered the stand alone Western Pleasure arena for a full Welsh programme. On the day of the show we all walked into the arena and followed the line of the fence around to our area for judging, nose to tail, creating enough interest from our numbers to get the show announcer thoroughly involved in attracting attention to the Welsh ponies and the classes.

WORKING GROUP APPOINTED

As a result of the increase in membership of the Welsh Pony and Cob Society in the Burnett, Fraser Coast and Sunshine Coast areas the Queensland RPG have appointed a working group to explore opportunities for promoting the Welsh breeds in the area. The group's terms of reference are to encourage agricultural show Society's to include classes for the Welsh breeds in their schedules, introduce an annual points competition for in-hand and ridden ponies and cobs at the cooperating shows and arrange a education and activity day for members in the area.

The first meeting of the working group held at Gunalda addressed by John Riley Chairman of the Queensland RPG and Committee of Management member was attended by twenty enthusiastic members. The working group will be chaired by RPG member Sue Groundwater, Harmony Hill Stud with clerical support from Ruth Porter of Roseneath Pony Stud.

STUD NEWS

BRYNTAWEL
Julia Hardie from Bryntawel Sporting Horses had great success at Kalbar Show with the pretty little Welsh A, Woranora Priscilla, winning Supreme Welsh exhibit. She was also Champion Welsh A at the recent Laidley Show. Section C mare, Seawynd Gay Girl, strutted her stuff at Boonah Show to win Champion C & D. Her foal by Gweunydd Sionyn is eagerly awaited in October. Riverlea Henna won Supreme Welsh exhibit at Ipswich Show earlier in May, so we have had a great show season so far. We have been busily preparing the show team for Brisbane Royal, as we have six ponies nominated for the Welsh classes.

Janette Cairns & Bob Vines are expecting four foals this year: two partbreds, one Welsh B and one Welsh A. They have been campaigning Valley View Sir Walter around the traps this year and have been successful with Champions by the handful in both Welsh and Arabian Pony classes. He will be out in harness next year in a jogger and the year after will graduate to a Viceroy.

ROSENEATH WELSH PONIES

Ruth Porter of Roseneath Welsh Ponies has recently purchased the Section C weanling filly, Burrowa Dancing (pictured above), from Sue and Ace Coughlan`s stud Burrowa. Burrowa Dancing is out of Bannods Gem and by Trapalanda Downs Jaxon. Dancing will be shown at the NSW All Welsh in October before arriving in Qld.

The Section C mare Glynyarra Park Rose Red, has been sashed Champion Cob mare at Fraser Coast and Toogoolawah Shows and was Supreme Cob at Fraser Coast. She is an absolute delight to have in the stable and to show.

The Section B Glenian Park Contessa was Champion Welsh mare/filly at Fraser Coast and has Reserve Champ sashes from her buckskin classes at Fraser Coast and Gympie, along with Champion Arabian Derivative at Gympie. Tess is out for the winter much to her horror as she is such a princess, and will come back in for Noosa Show in September.

The Section C Penyghent Royal Albert is doing what he loves best, at the moment restoring a young girl`s confidence after a couple of frights on bigger horses. He looks after his child riders far better than he ever looks after me!

Section B geldings, Wattles Halifax (pictured above) and Wattles Bavaria, both by Owendale Coconut, are in work preparing for pony dressage comps in the spring and summer. Both are working towards their Elementary debuts. Both so trainable and lovely boys.

The lovely Part Welsh gelding, Euston Raffles, is on lease to Sarah Isaac, and has been doing some good winning at Pony Club dressage. His full brother Euston Royal Ascot (pictured above) was 3rd and 5th in huge classes in open company at a recent dressage competition in Toowoomba. Ascot is on loan to Karen Dennien from Gobongo Charolais Stud at Jackson.

TALSARN WELSH MOUNTAIN PONIES
Greg Dallaway moved his small stud from Victoria to Fernvale in South-East Queensland almost three years ago, bringing with him a small group of mares and a colt. A story on the origins of the stud was published in our 1996 Journal, with some follow-up notes by the Journal editor (on connections with the Criban Stud) in 2003.

Since arrival there has been fairly mixed luck - in the first season only 3 mares were to foal - and then EI arrived! One mare slipped a filly at the height of her infection, and another suddenly developed severe pneumonia ; she very luckily recovered, and went on to foal safely a rich bay colt by Victorian sire Glynyarra Kristian, who has some well-known progeny in Qld. Kristian was used a couple of times as a Twyford/Revel outcross on the predominantly Bowdler and Criban line mares.

The second season brought several colts and only one filly which was unfortunately lost at birth. So several extra boys - very engaging and fun little characters! - are temporarily swelling the ranks here. Hopes are held for at least a couple of fillies to arrive next Spring by young sire Talsarn Thomas, of old Criban and Revel lines.
